A piece of peace

It was late. A crescent moon hung low in the sky above Metropolis, surrounded by thousands of twinkling stars.

Smoothly, Superwoman landed on the balcony of Hudson's study, her red cape streaming behind her, blown up by a cold, almost frosty breeze.
Kaela-El – that was Superwoman's given name – stood still for a moment and inhaled the air of Metropolis, feeling it filling her lungs. She smiled.
It smelled like snow. At last!

The air was filled with the scent of the first snow of the year and in a couple of hours the countryside certainly would be covered with a cold, white mantle.

Still smiling, Kaela looked up in the sky. "It was about time," she murmured.

Within her memory the day of the first snowfall was something special to her and she couldn't wait any longer for tomorrow.
No matter how many times she had saved the world yet, with the first snowflakes hitting the ground Superwoman turned into a little girl again. Trying to catch the white flakes with her tongue, starting snowball fights, making snow angels, building snow men.
All that she was planning to do tomorrow – it would be a lot of fun!

Bouncing a little, she moved toward the French door and entered Hudson's study. It was dark and empty. Of course it was. Hudson wasn't home yet!

Kaela grinned, stretching out her arms above her head and suppressed a huge yawn. Instead, she was only yawning a little, almost lady-like, before superspeeding out of her tight, blue costume.
A second later, she was dressed in cosy warm socks, pink sweatpants and a baggy grey jersey. She tied her long, brown hair into a loose pony-tail and put on a pair of glasses with heavy black frames.
Now, Hudson was home!

She turned toward the door when suddenly, she heard a quiet ringing noise, coming from her laptop. It was the e-mail alert.

Hudson sighed annoyed. She had actually thought she could quit work for today. Apparently, that was just wishful thinking.
Sitting down in her chair, she pressed some keys on her laptop and the mailing program opened. There was a new message in the inbox.

Nice article, Kent. Will make it on page 1.
Happy holidays! :)
P. White

Hudson stared at the screen, blinking. It didn't surprised her that her article was good enough for the first page of the Daily Planet. Of course it was – she had worked real hard on it and was proud – but that e-mail was definitely a surprise.
"Perry really used an emoticon," Hudson mumbled. "That must be a first time." Grinning, she shook her head. She should save that e-mail. "Just in case..."

But now, she was on holidays and there wouldn't be a place in her mind for anything else but her well-deserved holidays.
Shutting down her laptop, Hudson stood and left the study, humming a cheerful melody while going upstairs where the actual apartment was.
The upper floor of the penthouse was dark and appeared almost abandoned. Hudson frowned. Switching on the lights, she took a look at the grandfather clock standing opposite to her.

"Oh, come on! It's not that late!"

A frustrated sound escaped Hudson's lips, then she began to search the rooms, one by one – without using her abilities. No X-ray vision, no superspeed, no nothing.
Hudson did it the ordinary way. Like any other women in this world, coming home after work, expecting to see her husband that wasn't quite amused by the knowledge of his wife's extraterrestrial powers.
Unfortunately, her husband seemed to discovered an uncommon ability himself – vanishing without a trace.
Nevertheless, Hudson knew he was home. He always was! Somewhere... In on of the eight bedrooms, or in one of the six bathrooms, or in the library, or in the living room, or...

"Well, at least this is not LuthorManor," she mumbled, thinking about using her abilities to accelerate her search when suddenly, she heard her husband's voice. Following, she walked over to one of the bedrooms she hadn't checked yet.

Great! Why not looking there first?

"Winnie-the-Pooh sat down at the foot of the tree, put his head between his paws and began to think."

The door stood ajar and carefully, Hudson opened it a bit.

"First of all he said to himself: "That buzzing-noise means something. You don't get a buzzing-noise like that, just buzzing and buzzing, without its meaning something..."

The first thing Hudson saw was the end of a four poster bed – though its bedpost weren't just ordinary posts but huge coloured pencils. A green and a red one.

Grinning, Hudson gave the door another slight push, seeing her husband's legs outstretched on the mattress. Black socks, black pants – as always.
Squinting around the corner, she saw him wearing a light blue shirt – obviously, today was a good day.

Hudson's smile widened when she noticed some brownish spots at the collar of his shirt. Chocolate fingerprints, likely caused by the little girl in pink pajamas that was lying next to him, snuggled up against his chest and eagerly looking at the open book, he was holding in his hands.

"If there's a buzzing-noise, somebody's making a buzzing-noise, and the only reason for making a buzzing-noise that I know of is because you're a bee..."

Still grinning, Hudson watched the little girl.
Her hair was deep red, almost brown, and slightly curled. Her eyes were icy-blue, surrounded by long dark lashes and her smile was just like her father's.
She was Lex Luthor's daughter, through and through. She looked like him and sometimes she even acted like him – very controlled and definitely not like a girl her age. Though on the other hand, she was also like her mother – a little whirlwind of emotions and happiness.

'If only she wouldn't have my ears... the poor girl,' Hudson thought, plucking a little at her hair to cover her own ears she really didn't like at all.

"So he began to climb the tree. He climbed and he climbed and he climbed and as he climbed he sang a little song to himself. It went like this: Isn't it fun-"

"No Daddy! Sing it!" The little girl suddenly pulled at Lex's arm.

Hudson had to bite her tongue not to laugh out loud when she saw her daughter fluttering her lashes at Lex. Yes, that was her daughter!

"You want me to sing?" he asked, raising his brows.

The girl nodded but suddenly, she wrinkled up her nose and flashed her father a bright smile.
"Winnie sings, too. Daddy, pleassssssseeeeeeeee!"

"Ah, the magic word. Then I have to try," Lex chuckled and cleared his throat. For a moment a deep wrinkle shown up on his forehead as if he was thinking about a melody, then he looked back into the book.

"Isn't it funny, how a bear likes honey? Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! I wonder why he does?"

Hudson leaned against the door-frame, listening. A happy and deeply satisfied smile on her lips.
Lex had a wonderful voice and she liked him singing. Unfortunately, he didn't sing quite often and definitely never when he knew that she was around.

"It's a very funny thought that, if Bears were Bees, they'd build their nests at the bottom of trees. And that being so (if the Bees were Bears), we shouldn't have to climb up all these stairs. -" Lex paused and watched his daughter. "Was that good?"

"Perfect, Daddy!" she beamed and pecked his cheek, before cuddling up against him again.

Inwardly, Hudson was dancing and bounding of joy, and she would love to enter the room for some excessive family cuddling but she didn't. That was Lex's and Lily's time. It had always been!
Lex brought his daughter to bed, stayed with her for a couple of time and read to her a story. He even did it when he wasn't at home but in a business trip. Then he called at bedtime to read to Lily via telephone.
Lex Luthor was certainly the best father a girl could think of. And he had his qualities as a husband, either. Even though a lot of people would believe either of it.

Hudson stood there for a while, leaned against the door-frame and listened to Lex's warm voice, narrating the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh – a story they both had liked when they had been children.

If only more people could see Lex the way Hudson did. He wasn't perfect – quite the opposite – and sometimes it was more than just difficult for Hudson to stay with him, but deep inside Lex was a good man. He was a good father and less malicious than people tended to think of him.

"When you're done pondering, come and kiss her good night," Lex suddenly said, turning his head to face Hudson.

She blinked since she hadn't noticed him stop reading, but then she smiled and entered the room.

Lily was lying next to her father, sleeping. Her mouth slightly opened, she hold her teddy pressed tight to her little chest. It was really cute and Hudson smiled happily.

"You're late," she whispered and bent down to breath a kiss on her daughter's cheek. "Night, sweety!"

"Ditto!"

"I made a short stop in Gotham," Hudson mumbled and hastened to change the topic. "Lily was supposed to be in bed three hours ago... without having chocolate before." She glanced at her husband's collar and raised her brows reproachfully.

"She was waiting for her mom. Besides, we brushed her teeth," Lex replied and rose. Carefully, he covered Lily with the blanket, kissed her forehead and smiled satisfied, before he faced Hudson again.

She winced and screwed up her face a bit. As Superwoman she was able to stop criminal masterminds from pursuing their dark deeds, or to save the world from meteors, but as a mother she was far away from being super. Quite the opposite.

'It looked so easy with Mom... How did she do it?' Hudson thought and watched her sleeping daughter.

"At least Lily has an awesome dad," Lex smirked, well aware of what his wife was thinking, and he pinched her nose. "Don't worry. She still loves you. Not as much as she loves me, of course, but -"

"We'll make snow angels tomorrow. And we'll build a snowman. And then we'll see whom of us she loves more," Hudson replied, intending to spend a wonderful day with her wonderful daughter.

Lex pursed his lips, amused, and moved her with him out of Lily's room. He closed the door behind them and gave Hudson a pitiful look. "She'll always love me more. Specially since there isn't any snow in Metropolis and surroundings..."

"Tomorrow there is," Hudson beamed and wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him hello. "We'll have snow tomorrow!"

"With a little help from your special friend in Gotham? I didn't know that bats have control over the weather." Lex pulled her a little closer, but suddenly, Hudson winced again.

Of course, he hadn't forgotten her comment about Gotham City and he was curious what she had done there - she had to tell him now, before they would end up in an enormous fight.

'We'll fight anyway. He probably won't be all smiles...' Hudson thought.

Taking a deep breath, she pushed him away on arm's length and looked him in the eye, sternly. "I was at Bruce's and asked him to spend the holidays here. With us," she hastily said and added: "He'd be alone since Alfred is going to visit India for the holidays and -"

"No one should be alone on Christmas," Lex finished, nodding. "What was his answer then? Will he come?"

Hudson frowned, watching him suspicious. "I guess so... when you're okay with it..."

Again, Lex nodded but the suspicious expression remained on Hudson's face. That was easy. Too easy. Way too easy!
"Okay.What have you done?"

"Me? Nothing," he answered, giving her an innocent look. "Well... not yet."

"Oh, funny," Hudson groaned and rolled her eyes. "Really funny..."

"It is, isn't it?!" Lex smirked and pulled her back into his arms. "You invited Bruce without my knowledge. I'll take that as my Get Out of Jail card. He's very welcome for Christmas, nevertheless - and you won't freak out about my next project." He watched her, waiting for her to agree on that deal while his hands moved beneath her jersey.

Hudson narrowed her eyes, trying to ignore his warm hands on her naked skin what wasn't that easy at all. He knew how to persuade her. He knew it far too well.

Damn it!

"Ahem... what is your next project?"

"Hm, we'll see," Lex replied vaguely, nibbling at her earlobe. "I'd like to have Bruce around for Christmas. Could be fun. And Lily would love to see good, old uncle Bruce dressed up as Santa."

Hudson giggled, half because of the imagination of Bruce Wayne in a Santa suit and half by the ticklish movements of Lex's fingers on her back.

"Will you call the costume rental now?"

"Ah, that can wait until tomorrow," he mumbled at her lips. "First, you should fulfill your conjugal obligations... You promised me a little boy, remember?!"

"Is there anything else on your mind?" Hudson rolled her eyes and giggled at the same time while tugging his shirt out of his waistband. "You aren't human!"

"Says the girl from outer space..."

Kissing and groping, they stumbled into their bedroom and fell upon the mattress. Hudson's jersey and Lex's shirt were laying higgledy-piggledy on the floor next to their pants.

"You really fine with Bruce coming?" Hudson gasped between their kisses.

"Like I said: no one should be alone on Christmas, Angel. I can still hate him after the holidays." Then he forced her onto her back and attacked her mouth with another kiss.
