The fire in the hearth was burning low and Lex had been settled deep into the chair beside it for hours now. The bottle of scotch on the table close at hand had considerably less liquid in it than it had at the start of the evening. Lex's fingers were still curled around the latest glass as he sat and waited.

A breath of cool air made the flames dance as the door to Lex's office finally opened. Lex didn't expect an apology from his visitor, so he wasn't disappointed when one wasn't forthcoming. Bruce really wasn't the kind of man who apologised to anyone, a trait that Lex could respect. Besides, he'd known Bruce for a very long time and he had always come and gone as he pleased. Lex honestly didn't expect that to change now.

Bruce had clearly come from some black tie function, as he was still immaculately dressed. He strode across the room with an easy grace and poured himself a glass of Lex's scotch without bothering to ask permission. He tossed it back quickly and poured another. This one he merely sipped from as he leaned against the back of Lex's chair.

Turning his head slightly, Lex looked up at him. "As bad as that, was it?"

The shadows didn't hide the wry twist of Bruce's lips. "Every one of them wanted something from me: money, favours... They're like perfectly dressed vultures; I'm sure you know the type. I would much prefer not to have to attend these events, but I have to keep up appearances."

Lex set his glass of scotch aside and then turned further round in his chair. Reaching up, he caught hold of Bruce's tie and pulled until Bruce leaned closer to him.

"Not here," Lex said.

Bruce offered him a genuine smile. "No, not here," he agreed. "You know me too well anyway, Lex."

Lex didn't disagree as Bruce closed the remaining distance between them, claiming Lex's mouth with his own. There hadn't been any secrets between them for a long time; a refreshing change, Lex had found.
