Lex
was irritated as he pushed open the double doors to his study. He had
spent the last twenty minutes running and shouting through the mansion
– as though he was retarded...
All
he wanted was a nice, peaceful Sunday afternoon, but that seemed to
become wishful thinking.
"Daddy!"
Lex
looked up and, immediately, the
corners of his mouth twitched into a smile. There they were, his
four-year-old daughter and his six-month-pregnant wife.
It
still amazed him how much they looked alike – brown hair,
high cheek bones, full lips. Only their eyes differed; Hannah clearly
had inherited his blue ones, not Chris' which were more greenish.
"Where
you been, Daddy?" Hannah staggered toward him and Lex bent down,
opening his arms.
"I've
been looking for you... I thought, I had to spend my Sunday alone;
without my girls," he said and caught her right before she stumbled
over her own feet.
Truly,
Hannah was clever, just like her mother, but she was also a tad clumsy
– just like her mother.
"And
draw the wrath of Lex Luthor upon us?!" Chris had followed and gently
touched his scalp.
He
squinted up at her and found her flashing him one of those mischievous
smiles. God, he loved her!
Chris
certainly was the only person that really understood and believed in
him. He was glad to have her, even when she was
mocking him. She knew his darkest secrets and yet, she was still with
him, making him a father again.
"Daddy,
's family day! You're not alone," Hannah said and kissed his forehead.
"I is with you all day. I and Mommy!"
Lex
smiled and hugged her a little. Hannah was all his and she loved him
from the bottom of her little heart – it was an amazing
feeling that hopefully lasted forever...
"I
love family days," he said and rose, lifting Hannah up. "It's just me
and my girls... – Why are you here anyway? It's Sunday, the study is off
limits!"
Instead
of answering, Chris and Hannah exchanged a conspiratorial wink, causing
Lex to frown. He
didn't like them having secrets, even though he knew it couldn't be
anything big. But, he felt left out; he had never learned to handle
that kind of feeling.
"Down, Daddy! Down... pleeeaseee!" Hannah wriggled in his arms until Lex set her down to her feet.
"Stay!"
She eyed him sternly, and when he nodded perplexed, she headed for the
door which led to Chris' office.
"What's that supposed to mean?" He turned to face Chris who was just about to lift her hand, having that mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
"Don't
you dare pet my head, calling me 'good boy'!"
"But,
Hannah trained you so well..." Chris grinned and kissed his cheek. "The
munchkin will appreciate it."
"And,
stop calling him 'munchkin'!"
"Huh...
back to Oompa-Loompa, then?!"
Lex
rolled his eyes and bent down to her rounded stomach. "You mother's
killing me... Logan!"
"And
draw the wrath of Hannah Luthor upon me?!" She giggled and Lex sighed,
theatrically.
"That's what I'm talking about," he mumbled, although he loved those moments with Chris acting a bit silly.
He
rose and looked at her. "What's Hannah up to? Where did she go?"
Chris flashed him a Sphinx-like smile and took his hand to steer him over to the sofa, making him sit down.
"Your
curiosity will be your downfall... – Wait a sec: Logan?
You wanna name the munchkin Logan? Logan Luthor?" She stared at him
in disbelief. "I thought we've left the alliterations behind... Logan???"
"I
like it," Lex replied, ready to defend his choice of name, but Chris
was already distracted. She looked right through him, and when he
wanted to check what had caught her attention, she tugged at his hands.
"Close
your eyes!"
"Why?"
"Daddy,
close eyes!" Hannah was standing behind him, and Chris flashed him a
beaming smile.
"That's why... – Do it for her, hon... please. You won't regret it," she added in a whisper, and reluctantly Lex closed his eyes. A second later, he felt Hannah's hand touching his face to cover his eyes.
"Don't
peek!"
"I wouldn't dare," Lex replied, slightly amused. The sound of her voice was strict, and he wondered whether this was another thing she had inherited from him.
"What
are you up to, Princess?"
"Hand!"
There
was some whispering, and Lex heard Hannah slightly moaning.
"Hand, please!" she said again, causing him to smirk.
Apparently,
Chris had scolded their daughter quietly; she attached great importance
to good manners. Well, she was right, though Hannah was anything but
rude.
Curiously,
Lex stretched out his hand and suddenly began to feel uncomfortable. It
wasn't his nature to just let things happen; not even when he
was alone with his family.
He
sighed quietly, and focused on Hannah. Whatever it was, it seemed to be
important to her, and who was he to reject his little princess?
There
was a clicking sound – certainly caused by Chris' old SLR
– and he felt something brushing against his fingertips.
Paper... a brochure, maybe.
"Open
eyes!" Hannah said and removed her hand from his face.
There was another click, and when Lex openend his eyes, he found a baby-blue envelope in his hands. Puzzled, he looked at his wife and daughter.
Indeed,
Chris was holding her SLR, taking picture after picture, and seemed to
have the time of her life. At least she developed all photos herself,
so chances anyone but his family would see that idiotic expression were
rather limited.
"Happy
Daddy day!"
"Happy
Father's Day," Chris smiled, taking another picture before she sat down
next to him.
Lex
blinked. Father's Day... he had completely forgotten about it, but
obviously, his girls hadn't...
"Open,
Daddy!" Hannah urged him, and bounced a little in her seat.
Smiling,
Lex ripped the envelope open. Inside, he found some kind of greeting
card, but when he took it out, he realized it actually was a self-made
order, shaped like a shield. It was made from dark-brown paperboard and
showed pictures of Hannah and him. Five smaller ones, also shaped like
shields, and a bigger oval one in the middle. Above the pictures was a
golden banner, saying World's Bestest Daddy.
Lex
recognized Chris' writing but knew immediately that Hannah had copied
the letters; they were a bit sloppy and he could still see some pencil
lines.
World's
Bestest Daddy...
His sight blurred, and he had to blink. That was the boldest exaggeration he had ever heard – or rather read!
Of
course, he loved being a father, but he wasn't sure if he was a good
one; however, he knew he wasn't the bestest!
Next to him, Chris squeezed his upper arm a little, and brushed her lips against the back of his head.
"You
made Daddy speechless, Cookie," she said, cheerfully. "That must be a
first..."
"Daddy
don't like it!" Hannah winced. "You had helped me more! 'S no good! 'T
look like a baby maked it!"
"Made,"
Chris corrected habitually. "Just give him a sec to have a look at it;
there's so much to see... Besides, it looks great! I want one myself..."
"You
no daddy!"
"Not
yet, but I'm working on it!"
Lex
heard their voices but kept staring at the shield. He was overwhelmed
and feared his own voice would break if he said anything now. Chris and
Hannah loved him so much... enough, to make him such an almost silly
gift.
It
looked as though the five smaller pictures stood for every year being a
father. There was even one showing him and a heavily pregnant Chris...
He
smiled and breathed in before he looked at his daughter. "I
love it, Princess! It's perfect... And, you made it all by yourself!?"
"Mommy
helped," Hannah muttered and scratched the bridge of her nose
– just like Chris would do.
"Only
a little. I basically bought the paperboard..."
Lex
flashed her a smile before pulling Hannah upon his lap, hugging her.
"It's a perfect gift, Princess! It looks great, almost real... I really
love it!"
Hannah chuckled happily and snuggled her back against his chest.
"I
explain," she said, pointing at the top left picture. "They for all my
years --"
"I
figured," Lex smirked, but Hannah shh'd him.
"Here,
when I was in Mommy's belly. 'S where the munchin is now," she told
him, earnestly, before moving her finger to the next picture. "And
here, I was a baby and you holded me. And here, I was a baby, too, but
a bigger baby. And you helped me walk..."
She
explained every single picture as though Lex hadn't been in her life
before and knew nothing about her. However, Lex listened closely, while
looking over her shoulder at the shield. She
must've thought a lot about this gift – or someone else had
thought it out for her; he glanced at his wife who just watched them,
entranced.
"And here," Hannah pointed at the biggest picture, "is I and you and my bike, and you help me ride it. And really soon, you show me to ride it with no trainy wheels!" She turned her head and looked at Lex, beaming.
"You're
the bestest Daddy inna whole wide world, and I love you sooooooooo
much!" She rose on her knees – almost hitting his testicles
- and flung her arms around his neck.
He
almost tipped over and groaned slightly, but pulled her little body
closer.
"Too
much love will kill you..." Chris cheerfully hummed next to
him, horribly off-key, and caressed his back. "Cookie, don't hug him to
death, we still need him. – Oh,
wait, he likes
it... Let's give him a huge bear hug then!"
Lex
closed his eyes, and a happy sigh escaped his lips. This moment simply
was perfect; a perfect moment with his girls who loved him so much.
